The poor, indigenous, homosexuals, Afro-descendants and migrants suffer the greatest discrimination in the region.
The
resulting scandal after ultra-right-wing Lima newspaper Correo on April
17 published an article that said Quechua-speaking Peruvian
Congresswoman Hilaria Supa was unfit to be a lawmaker because of errors
in her Spanish writing, has brought discrimination again to the
forefront of public discussion. The 2008 Latinobarómetro — a public opinion poll of 19,000 people in 18 Latin American countries — found that sectors that suffer the worst discrimination in the region are the poor, indigenous, homosexuals, Afro-descendants, the elderly and the disabled.
