Fairness: What is fair in this election season?

Can Obama get fair treatment from the right-wing controlled media?  I am very doubtful.  In fact, I was doubtful before the selection of Palin and with the selection of Palin.
I have become convinced that Obama will never get a fair pass from the media.  It is amazing how the differences abound and how the doublespeak and the lies are said and gone unchallenged.  Just look at the difference between Obama wife’s and Palin’s husband, and how they are portrayed in the media...

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America’s.

If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude," with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

I could not even begin to imagine what the press would have said if Michelle Obama had been part of a fringe group trying to secede from the union, but since this is Palin’s husband and the Republicans and right wing media like her, they get a pass.

And speaking of family values, when the Obama’s are compared with the McCain’s, the same thing happens…

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

We never hear about McCain cheating on his first wife or how he abandoned her for the rich heiress he married after she was disfigured in a car accident.  Yes, that is his private life, but isn’t Obama’s religion his private life as well?  And doesn’t Obama’s Christian value of being married to the same woman for 19 years without ever cheating, say something about his Christian values?

b3.jpgAnd, these are just examples of how the right-wing is trying to steal the election, by portraying Obama as less than American and holding him to a different standard.  What really irks me to no end, is the divide and conquer the media is trying to play up between Blacks and Latinos.  Yes, Latinos in some states, Texas and Florida, voted overwhelmingly for Bush.  And, Latinos in some states were very supportive of Hillary over Obama, but the reality is Latinos have come out in support of Obama over McCain big time and the media is telling lies, trying to portray a spilt where there isn’t one.

It is the old divide and conquer strategy, because they know if Blacks and Latinos vote as a block they will put Obama in over the top, and they are trying to say that Latinos will not vote for Obama.  However, that could not be further from the truth.  In fact, the latest Latina magazine has this to say about the Latino vote and Obama:

The truth is we {Latinos} have a history of voting for African Americans:  David Dinkins won 73 percent of the Latino vote in 1989 when he ran for mayor of New York city, and in 2005, an estimated 65 percent of Latinos rallied around Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson. …In fact, when Obama ran for the Democratic nomination to the Senate in 2004, he won more Latino votes than is Hispanic opponent.  The final nail in the theory’s coffin: At press time, a Pew Hispanic Center survey found that 66 percent of us support Obama (Kenrya Rankin Naasel, Latina October 2008 page 106).”

Although, the right wing controlled media will not get this information out, those of us who are online will be able to blog, post and write to inform the public and ourselves of the truth.

As a matter of fact, the only way to get the truth out  there, to get fairness in this campaign is for us to keep ourselves, our friends, and our communities informed of the facts.  They will lie and distort until they steal it again in November, and we must be willing to stand up and be sure to claim our historic moment for ourselves.  We will not be divided and we will not be conquered.  United we stand as African-Americans, Latin-Americans, and Blacktinos who will not allow them to steal the election.  Who will not allow their lies to go unchecked?
